How do you felt wool?
What type of wool do I need?
Could you give me some names?
There are several different ways of doing this. None are right or wrong just different. I do it as follows.
I knit a length of fabric then felt it.
Choose a pure wool. Do not use machine washable wool as it will not felt. That's why it is machine washable.
Knit to a very loose tension. The gaps will fill up in the felting. The felt will shrink by approx 1 third of the size.
When knitted I put it through the 60 degree wash with something to agitate the fabric. The agitation is what makes it felt.I have some machine washable slippers which I throw in. Other people use trainers.
When dry if its not felted enough for the intended purpose the fabric can go thru another cycle in the same way.
When complete I use the fabric to make jackets bags etc in the same way as any other dressmaking/tailoring fabric.
