What Would you have said?
When Thomas Alva Edison invented the phonograph the first words he recorded were "Mary had a little lamb". As smart as the guy was, don;t you think he would have said something a little more profound. I mean this is the first recorded audio in history! What would you have said?
I think it's perfectly fitting that he said something so asinine as "mary had a little lamb." Maybe he had nothing profound to say, maybe he didn't want to say anything profound.
Maybe he didn't know if it would work, so he didn't want to look pompous in assuming people would care what he said.
Maybe "mary had a little lamb" has deep meaning for him in relation to his childhood or something.
Perhaps! He knew that the novel existence of recorded audio was more important than the first thing said on it, so he didn't freak out and over-analyse.
